When This World is All on Fire

When This World is All on Fire by William Sanders. This story utterly galls me. Why? Because it's so generic that I knew the rough path the last eleven pages would take after reading the first four? Well, sort of. Perhaps it's better to say that it galls me because of that damned page four. I don't know why, but something on that page - and it's all descriptions and such, really - seems to lift above the generic level of the work. The writer shows some glimmer of potential that I can't put my finger on, some sign that he's not going to write your average 'Indian reservations are now the best places to live, turning the tables' + 'environmental abuse taken to an extreme' + 'incestuous bigoted rednecks' story. Something that makes you think he just might turn the story around and make it deep, or meaningful, or something.

But no, he writes the same story anyone else would given the template 'Indian reservations are now the best places to live, turning the tables' + 'environmental abuse taken to an extreme' + 'incestuous bigoted rednecks'.

Just for the dashed hopes: Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

(Review coda: I went looking. The guy has a website. It plays WAVs when you open certain pages. I'm not linking it. Mostly for that reason.)
